Starvation:

With starvation, the initial rate of weight loss may be as high as 1 to 1.5 kg /day or more. After
two to three weeks, however, it slows to 0.5 kg/day.

The obvious problem with total fasts is that both fat and lean body mass (protein and water) are
lost. It is potentially dangerous and could lead to significant starvation ketosis (from the
metabolism of fat during fasts); electrolyte derangements; vitamin, mineral and other
micronutrient deficiencies; and a significant potential for morbidity and mortality.

In the absence of dietary carbohydrate, the body starts manufacturing substances called
ketone bodies, hence the name ketosis. The ketone bodies prevent the brain from shutting
down, because this vital organ starts burning the ketone bodies in place of sugar.

Apparently, ketones in the blood can reach 5-7 Mm in fasting subjects, and this is essential to
preserve glycogen in the muscles from breaking down into glucose to feed the brain.

Ketones are the secret to why humans can survive starving for about 2 months instead of 2-3
weeks.

Also, the weight loss which happens in conditions of total starvation is highly undesirable. About
half the weight lost is not fat at all, but lean tissue, i.e.; the body starts burning up its own
muscles.

Several deaths have been reported in patients with cardiac arrhythmias. Total fasting should be
done only in the hospital, where fluid, electrolyte loses, acid-base balance and blood pressure
can be monitored. The rise in ketones with fasting inhibits uric acid excretion and may
precipitate urate renal stones if the patient is not appropriately treated.
