Fasting:

Fasting should not be confused with starvation. Fasting is constructive while starvation is
destructive. Starvation can only begin when the time for breaking a fast is exceeded.

A properly directed fast is not only beneficial but has its remedial value. Fasting is merely a
digestive and physiological rest during which the body is enabled to devote all its energies to
eliminating the accumulation of waste, poisonous and toxic matter which are responsible for
most ailments, from the system.

The philosophy of fasting is that digestive organs like the stomach and the intestines and
assimilative organs like the liver, its anabolic function, are given complete rest whereas
depurating organs like the kidneys. The bowels, the lungs and the skin (sweat glands) together
with the liver of its eliminative function are allowed full play to carry off the effects- and dead
matter which have acted as an encumbrance in normal physiological actions.

In short, fasting is an overhauling and purifying process. It is needed as it is an essential and
natural process by which the metabolism may become readjusted.

It should be noted that when we talk of a fast we mean the avoidance of all food, solid or liquid
except water. This means complete and total abstinence from food.

Proper elimination while fasting does not begin before the third day. As a rule, it takes about
three days before the system readjusts itself to the new physiological changes. This will
probably account for the fact that hunger is most acute during the first three days and during
this time there is also a marked weakness and uneasiness. After the third or the fourth day
there is usually a disappearance of appetite, the tongue becomes highly coated, the breath
becomes very offensive.

During the first 24 hours of a fast, the body is able to utilize its stored carbohydrates, in the
form of glycogen, to fuel essential body processes. When glycogen reserves are depleted, fat
becomes the preferred energy source, so that protein (e.g., as found in muscle tissue) is
partially spared. However, some muscle tissue is often lost, even during short fasts. Weakness,
nausea, headaches, and depression can also develop during a fast, because ammonia and
nitrogen are released into the blood during the breakdown of muscle tissue. Ketones,
byproducts of fat metabolism, are produced once the body switches from burning
carbohydrates to burning fat.
For a couple of days, go on a fruit diet or a raw vegetable diet before resorting to water fast,
and cleaning the bowels daily with an enema.

We should remember that the breaking of a fast is more important then the fast itself, as wrong
methods here could lead to permanent damage of the digestive tract. Besides, after we are
through with a fast it would be absurd to go back to the same diet as before.

No matter how short the duration, fasting is unwise and potentially dangerous for some people,
including pregnant and lactating women, people with cancer, diabetes, gout, hypoglycemia,
stomach ulcers, liver, kidney, or lung disease, or anyone with a compromised immune system.

Modified fasts, in which fruit or vegetable juices and herbal teas are consumed, are probably
easier on the body than all-water fasts. Even so, a modified fast should be limited in duration;
modified fasts lasting more than a week should be supervised by a healthcare professional.

Side effects of fasting:
During the early stages of fasting, a number of changes occur: Headaches, nausea, dizziness,
coated tongue, body odor, palpitations, and muscle aches.
These symptoms are a necessary passage in the healing process. If a fast is to be carried out
for more than 48 hours a health professional should be contacted.

Starving or fasting just causes yo-yoing (losing and regaining weight).
