Health Consequences of Obesity
Obesity is associated with widespread and serious health consequences. The nature of this
relationship, in most cases, has not been fully defined. In particular, it has been difficult to
distinguish between obesity as a cause of a given condition and obesity as a phenomenon
associated with the condition. Moreover, it has not been possible to determine whether the
adverse health consequences associated with excess body weight reflect the role of obesity or
other factors associated with increased body weight. Nevertheless, whatever the nature of
these relationships, a large body of evidence clearly indicates that the risk of morbidity, and
probably the risk of mortality, from a variety of illnesses are increased in the overweight/obese
population.
