General Facts

Aloe vera (AV) is suggested to be beneficial in treating
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms

One explanatory factor for this is the anti-inflammatory
properties of the plant

It is possible that these anti-inflammatory effects of AV
could have beneficial effects on symptoms of IBS by
reducing gut hypersensitivity

Aloe (Aloe vera). Aloe vera is a popular plant used in
cosmetic care and first aid products.

Scientific studies and case reports support its use in the
treatment of stasis ulcers in humans, as well as thermal
injuries in animals (Klein & Penneys, 1988)

Aloe has a complex mixture of components, including
anthroquinones, steroids, saponins,
mucopolysaccharides, and salicylic acid

Useful for treating varying levels of back pain

Aloe vera has been used externally to treat various skin
conditions such as cuts, burns and eczema. It is alleged
that sap from Aloe vera eases pain and reduces
inflammation

Study performed in the 1990s showed that the healing
time of a moderate to severe burn was reduced when the
wound was treated on a regular basis with Aloe vera gel,
compared to the healing of the wound covered in a gauze
bandage (Farrar, 2005). In contrast, another study
suggested wounds to which Aloe vera gel was applied
were significantly slower to heal (Schmidt and
Greenspoon, 1991)

Aloe vera's beneficial properties may be attributed to
mucopolysaccharides present in the inner gel of the leaf,
especially acemannan (acetylated mannans)

Aloe vera that comes directly from the plant is a yellowish
liquid. It can be obtained by simply breaking off a piece of
the aloe vera plant. The liquid will run out and can be
applied topically. The leaves can also be crushed and
used as a salve.

The healing properties of aloe vera come from the 18
amino acids it contains. It is used to heal skin that has
been damaged. A common usage is to sooth sunburned
skin.

Aloe vera can also be made into juices, gels, powders
and is often added to products. Aloe vera can be found in
cosmetics, shampoos, lotions and many other common
household aloe vera products.

The many benefits of aloe vera are not fully researched as
of yet.

The healing uses of aloe vera have also been studied
internally. When taken in a capsule form, aloe vera has
proven to be a cure for constipation.

Some people have found it to be a helpful cure for acne.
Others simply love the way it adds softness to the skin.
Other uses are currently unproven, but many people still
rely on aloe vera to cure a range of common ailments

Early evidence suggests that extract from aloe in a
hydrophilic cream may be an effective treatment of
psoriasis vulgaris.

Study of aloe lotion suggests effectiveness for treating
seborrheic dermatitis when applied to the skin

There is preliminary evidence that oral aloe may reduce
the risk of developing lung cancer

Preliminary evidence suggests that aloe may be effective
in promoting healing of mild to moderate skin burns

There is limited but promising research of the use of oral
aloe vera in ulcerative colitis (UC),
Aloe vera is a plant that can produce latex and gel. The gel is extracted from the leaf, and it is this
substance that is most used as a treatment. AV has been evaluated in a number of different clinical
contexts and some promising results have been found for its use in controlling cardiovascular risk
factors, and diabetes, besides being beneficial in areas of dermatology
