What is Obesity?

Obesity is a predictor for early death, the development of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular
disease, hypertension, gallbladder disease, and respiratory problems.
    Obesity
The World Health Organization estimated that 1.6 billion adults (over age 15 years) were
overweight in 2005.

In women, 82% of non-Hispanic blacks are obese, compared to 75% of Mexican Americans and
58% of non-Hispanic white women.

Seventy-six percent of Mexican American men are obese, compared to 71% of non-Hispanic
white men and 69% of non-Hispanic black men.

Family income influences obesity. Women with lower income have a 50% higher risk of
developing obesity than those with higher income. The reason is thought to be the preferential
purchasing of high-fat, high-calories foods, which may be less expensive than healthy foods
such as fruits and vegetables.
hyperplastic obesity (child type) is increased the number of fat cells.
hyperplastic obesity (child type) is increased the number of fat cells.

It is appearance in children & may begin as early as age 2 for girls and age 3 for boys. People
who have always been obese since childhood, have 3-4 times more fat cells than people who
became obese as adults. Normal weight individuals have about 25 billion fat cells.

Severity obese individuals may have 273 billion, but the cells still contain only 0.8 microgram

triglycerides. This research has shown that the severity of obesity is related fat cell number.

The hypertrophic obesity (adult type), the number of fat cells is close to normal but the size is
increased. This type of obesity primarily occurs after puberty and tends to correlate with android
distribution. The reason of child type obesity is dangerous, because of its standing nature and
possible hereditary factors & is regained more rapidly than hypertrophic obesity. Hyperplastic
obesity tends predominate in lower body region.

The differences between overweight and obesity. Overweight is the excess amount of body
weight that includes muscle, bone, fat, and water while the obesity is the excess accumulation of
body fat. An overweight or obese is determined by body mass index (BMI).

A body mass index of between 25 and 29.9 indicates that an individual is overweight, whereas an
obese has a (BMI) of 30 or higher. Many clients, although normal or below normal in weight have
excess amount of fat stores, athletes are usually overweight because of increased muscle mass
not fat. So all obese are overweight, but not all overweight are obese.
