BMI for Children and Teens

(Also referred to as BMI-for-age)

BMI is used differently with children than it is with adults:
In children and teens, body mass index is used to assess underweight, overweight, and risk for
overweight. Children's body fatness changes over the years as they grow. Also, girls and boys
differ in their body fatness as they mature. This is why BMI for children, also referred to as BMI-
for-age, is gender and age specific. BMI-for-age is plotted on gender specific growth charts.
These charts are used for children and teens 2 – 20 years of age.

BMI Percentile:

A percentile is not the same as a percent; it's a means of comparing one individual to a group of
people. A person's BMI percentile indicates how his or her measurements compare to other
guys or girls in the same age group.

Each BMI chart has eight percentile lines for 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 95th
percentiles. A teen whose BMI is at the 50th percentile is close to the average of the population.
A teen above the 95th percentile is considered overweight because 95% of the population
weighs less than he or she does. A teen below the 5th percentile is considered underweight
because 95% of the population weighs more.

o        Underweight: Less than the 5th percentile.
o        Ideal weight: Between the 5th and the 85th percentiles (50th percentile is
average).
o        At risk for overweight: Between the 85th and 95th percentiles.
o        Overweight: Higher than the 95th percentile.

How to measure BMI percentile?

1.        Find your age along the horizontal (across) axis and your BMI along the vertical (up-
down) axis.

2.        You’ll find your percentile (between 5 and 95) where these two points meet.

Each of the BMI-for-age gender specific charts contains a series of curved lines indicating
specific percentiles. Healthcare professionals use the following established percentile cutoff
points to identify underweight and overweight in children.

BMI decreases during the preschool years, then increases into adulthood. The percentile curves
show this pattern of growth.
